Salli McQuaid: Bent
Echoes, 27”w x 18”h, 2008. Detail R.
Artist’s Statement
Probably
only a World War II Veteran or a person from Korea or China
would recognize that the fabric fans in this original textile
art allude to imagery of the Japanese ”Rising Sun” battle flag,
which was banned for a decade after their defeat by the allies
in 1944 and American post-war occupation. To some, the “Rising
Sun” is still regarded as a horrific reminder of Japanese
military aggression. Note the cobwebs on the stitched fans of
Bent Echoes. Fortunately, that era of history is long
past.
The
"fan" fabric used is collectible Japanese silk. Many original
machine embroideries are used. |
