Colored netting is used to emphasize aqua coloring. McQuaid digitized and embroidered the central flower image from her original drawing titled "Drooping Posie." and then appliqued it to the artwork. The "fan" forms were appliqued over pieced "sky" imagery to help achieve a surreal effect. The reverse features two batik textiles, one embossed with gold.

Artist's Statement
|
When I ask people
what is special about my textile art, they answer, “imagination,”
“originality,” or “detail.” What I like
about Cloudy Fans is its surrealistic, pensive and yet
peaceful quality. |
|
To me, surrealism
is a metaphor for “cloudy fans,” and vice versa. I therefore
embarked from the traditional Japanese “Cloudy Fan” block, combining
it with water imagery, to convey the quilt’s theme.
