Artist Statement

Haiku Bamboo is my fourth in a series of one-foot “Haiku” works for the Studio Art Quilt Associates annual benefit auction. It is autobiographical in that it reflects our move from a tranquil Japanese Koi garden in The Woodlands, Texas, to the Salmon runs in the Columbia Gorge Basin, Washington. The quiet greens in Haiku Bamboo reflect the subtle greens at the base of the Blue Mountains, just west of the city of Walla Walla Walla, where we now live.

The Bamboo plant is often regarded as a symbol of good luck. We believe our move to the lovely and peaceful Walla Walla Valley was fortunate, and I believe good fortune will pass along with this quilt.
