Artist's Statement

“Jailhouse Rock” is my favorite of Elvis Presley’s movies. Produced independently and shot in black and white, it is his most critically acclaimed film. Although the only time I saw “Jailhouse Rock” was in the mid-sixties, I still remember its most famous dance number, although I remember it in color, not black and white.  I have always considered its modern, sexy silhouettes, inspired by the movements Elvis extemporized to accompany his performed music, abstract. My version, Jailhouse Rock, completed in 2009, comprises my perceptions of this dance and this electric movie. The quilt – and the movie -- signify an era.
