Lions of Namib Desert: Cosmic Illusion #20

Salli McQuaid:  Lions of Namib Desert, 34"w x 22"h, 2008.

Artist's Statement

African Lions have actually re-inhabited and are thriving Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary: the beautiful Namib Desert adjoining the Skeleton Coast of Africa in Namibia. I wanted to do a desert artwork, and learning of the the lions surviving here inspired this composition. The Namib Desert Skeleton Coast also harbors a village of Africa’s most primitive people; their village is depicted in the quilt. Within its harsh boundaries, this desert contains other wildlife, and precious stones such as diamonds and rubies. In Lions of Namib Desert, I refer to these wonders.
