Sacred Gate (Torii): Cosmic Illusion #55

Salli McQuaid: Sacred Gate (Torii)
30.5”w x 35”h, batik, fabrics, threads, florist cloth (iridescent screen), 2009

Artist’s Statement

A vast man-made sea wall causing a toxic algal bloom similar to harmful “red tides” renders the Long beach harbor stagnant and polluted. The lovely, long white beach is deserted. Almost no sea life survives. The City plans to alter the sea wall so that the tides can again move freely, which will become a virtual Sacred Gate (Torii) to paradise.

The quilt was inspired by the traditional Japanese 10” Torii (sacred gate) block. It employs the use of florist cloth (iridescent screen) to capture a more ephemeral vision of the distant sky.

Quilt History: Selected for Long Beach International Quilt Festival "West Coast Wonders" 2010. Travels on to IQF Houston and Chicago, 2010-2011.
