A vast man-made sea wall causing
a toxic algal bloom similar to harmful “red tides” renders the Long beach harbor
stagnant and polluted. The lovely, long white beach is deserted. Almost no sea
life survives. The City plans to alter the sea wall so that the tides can again
move freely, which will become a virtual Sacred Gate (Torii) to paradise.
The quilt was inspired by the
traditional Japanese 10” Torii (sacred gate) block. It employs the use of
florist cloth (iridescent screen) to capture a more ephemeral vision of the
distant sky.
