Stellar Light: Cosmic Illusion #22

Salli McQuaid: #22:  Stellar Light, 31.5"x 21.5"h, 2008.

Artist's Statement

Stellar Light portrays the movement of light in my imaginary universe, which could well depict an actual universe in our vast galactic world given the endless expansion of the universe outside our galaxy. At the time I was creating Stellar Light, I was watching a series of lectures on UCLA television which explained the most recent theories of astronomy, such as black holes and inverse energy, which was fascinating. It occurred to me that the phenomenon of light is crucial to the balance of our vast universe. I decided to create my own galaxy, with the thought in mind that the quilt, given the seemingly infinite size of our universe, could actually depict another galaxy actually in existence.. Perhaps Stellar Light is a prediction of what person-kind will someday discover....

Anyway, the color of the quilt gets deeper as the eye circulates around it, which was really difficult to do considering the hundreds of pieces with which it is made up. As usual, I self-programmed the embroideries and appliques.
