Straightest Toes in Texas: Cosmic Illusion #43:

Salli McQuaid: Straightest Toes in Texas, 10”w x 8”h (quilt size), fabrics, threads,
matted and framed, 2009.

Artist’s Statement

Straightest Toes in Texas was my first full attempt at Carol Doak’s (inventor of paper piecing) method of paper piecing. I adapted her Texas star image, adding appliqués and varying fabrics, to achieve a less symmetrical composition. I also adapted another of her blocks to compose the three toes at the left. A small strip of gold lame covered cording provides relief to the central yellow rose image. Resident, self-designed and free-form quilting stitches were used to enhance this miniature, but complex, quilt.
