Salli McQuaid:
To a Garden, 44"w x 42"h, 2006.
Artist’s Statement
I had a wonderful, if exasperating, time
doing this quilt. I used four botanical flower image panels for the backs
of the four quads that comprise To a Garden, framing them in the
traditional Grandma's Attic block. It was necessary to piece one
row of each quad at a time to keep the background image intact.
In the bottom left quad I moved some pieces
around to create a more abstract interest. I highlighted some areas with embroidery. If you look closely, you can
discern a pond and a fish within this quad.
The quilt as a whole explores visual illusion
in that it creates impossible perspective on two levels -- inside the
quilt and the entire quilt. To a Garden is narrative, in that it
creates a story of rooms that lead to a garden. It is, finally, a tribute
to the garden.
