Eye cons ... (Cosmic Illusion #14)
Eye Cons (Cosmic Illusion #14), textiles, threads, naugahyde, eyelets, 45"x 52": 2007.
Sky, mountain and forest detail.
Eye Cons employs cutting edge computer embroidery in that McQuaid makes drawings, digitizes them, and then embroiders them out. Although machine- and computer- aided, the process can take hours.
Shows glitter of metallic stitchery. Eyelet has ribbon eyes woven through the eyelets. The cats are given a third, digitized and embroidered eye. The jumping cats feature cheetah eyes and snake eyes. The white tigers habitating the bamboo forest have their own eyes. Still another digitized eye. The sparkle from complicated halographic thread stitchery brightens up the area, like eyes sparkling. I added a kitten looking over the top of this label just for fun. Note casing for inserting rod at top.

Eye cons
(Cosmic Illusion #14) began because Studio Art Quilt
Associates was calling for entries to their Transformations 2008 traveling
exhibition. (I am a member at the Professional Artist level.) The theme of the
exhibition was "Icons." Ever the punster, I just wanted to do bunches of eyes. I
also needed to learn how to use my new embroidery software. This was the perfect
opportunity. But of course it took me two months of hard work, and I barely made
the deadline of November 1.
In spite of all its challenges, I cannot tell you
how much fun I had making Eye Cons. I dreamt eyes. Along the way,
I learned how to digitize and embroider my own drawings and appliques. I also
learned to all-over embroider fabric with my own designs. Some were just eyes
(for the cave-like circle in the bamboo forest). Some were cats with eyes -- for
the rectangular band on the left of the piece.
Eye Cons is cheerful, somewhat naive, and fun (and
illusory).... 11/07
