t was only after experiencing
Hurricane Ike -- the greatest natural disaster Texas has ever
experienced -- first hand that I could complete Hurricane Gustav. Hurricane Gustav hit
landfall about a month before Hurricane Ike. A year after the
disastrous Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Gustav did little damage to
New Orleans, but the potential was there.
After being in the direct
pathway of Hurricane Ike, I knew the phases and many of the dynamics of any hurricane: the clean side, the dirty side, the eye, the
gathering, the distillation, the dissipation, the aftermath. I knew the many
kinds of circles that compose a hurricane and give it its force. The artwork
Hurricane Gustav depicts these circles of power on many
different levels. The mood of the piece is fairly light, however, as
Hurricane Gustav was somewhat a relief after the unbelievable and
unforgettable devastation of the previous Hurricane Katrina. |
