McQuaid, Salli: Out-takes, 50”w x 39˝” h,
mixed media, 2009
Artist’s
Statement
The surrealistic Out-takes was
inspired by the “Blue Hawaii” movie, in which Elvis Presley starred.
Because of its overwhelming box office success, it began a series of
“formula” movies. These movies featured Elvis, a beautiful leading lady,
and inspirational panoramic views. The formula movies pretty much ended
the critical success of Elvis Presley’s acting career, although he was a
gifted natural actor.
The quilt was self-designed after I made
several to-scale drawings. Many difficult techniques, including piecing,
applique, machine embroidery (manipulated and resident), trapunto,
pantographing, and machine quilting were used. Materials included
crystals and fabric paint, as well as textiles (some Hawaiian) and
specialty threads, such as holograph, metallic, invisible, and
variegated varieties.
