Misc. Past Items

  • Salli demonstrated the use of top quality Kreinik metallic and silk threads to enhance quilts for  the Kreinik Manufacturing Company October 10 and 11, 2009, at the Houston International Quilt Festival Market. It was FUN. While demonstrating these threads, she generated six small new quilts. See *quilts, #58-63, Quilts IV.

  • Light is a Feather (Cosmic Illusion #32) was chosen for Dig-it-al Quilts, Studio Art Quilt Association -- Texas Members, a Photoseptembre U.S.A. Exhibit, Fiber Artspace, San Antonio, TX, September, 2008. Juried by Laurie Brainerd.

  • Pink Strength (Cosmic Illusion #23) accepted for the juried third annual Focus and Fiber Art Show, Alberta, Canada, July, 2008. Selected to travel on to Stony Creek, Ontario, Canada, for the month of August. Received cash appreciation award.

  • 22 of Salli McQuaid's quilts were on view at the 2008 Chama (New Mexico) Outdoor Quilt Show, June 14, 2008. It was a wonderful show, with many fine quilts on display. They were hung from buildings up and down the charming, historical main street. Quilts for sale were in an open-face tent. Show quilts occupied a vacated supermarket that caved in under the weight of snow last winter. Fortunately, the roof had been restored, and a handy new restaurant now occupies half the space.

  • Salli McQuaid's The Kiss (Cosmic Illusion #8) was on view at a virtual exhibition November 2007-2008. This exhibition was guest-curated by k. velis turan for www.SAQA.com.Quilt Festival in November (2007). Here, she presented the grand sweepstakes winning entry "Hope for our World," by Textile Artist Hollis Chatelain, to enthralled crowds.

"I really got to know and love the piece," said McQuaid. "The crowd helped me, and I helped them (appreciate the work). I truly enjoyed the experience."

  • McQuaid's Winter Wave (Cosmic Illusion #5) was shown October, 2007,  by The Revels theatre troupe, the Alliance Francaise, Houston, TX.

  • Hawaiian Blue (...#2) and To a Garden (...#3) were accepted to the "Windows" exhibition at The Gallery of St. Johns, Kingston, NY, also in November of 2007.

Momentary Setbacks

In 2008 and 2009 I underwent two foot surgeries entailing joint replacement and reconstruction by Dr.Robert E.Neville of The Woodlands, Tex. He did a great job. During each convalescence, I was required to keep my feet elevated for 40 days. I subsequently developed tendonitis of the hip flexor due to the physical impact on my body of having to use one foot during each convalescence. I am better able to get around now, but am doing physical therapy until I am completely well. Otherwise, I am able to continue making art and deal with the various aspects of Laughing Dragon Gallery. Please keep me in your prayers. (May, 2009)

In May of 2007 I underwent hip replacement surgery. Recovery until I could again work took about three months, so I am somewhat behind. As a result, I'm filling this space with some small completed projects and new ideas. My energy is almost all back now, and I'm only experiencing slight physical difficulties. Full recovery is expected in November, so I'm ahead of schedule there!

Without this surgery, I would have occupied a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I wish to express my thanks to Dr. Gregory Stocks, of Houston, who performed the procedure with his customary and acclaimed expertise. 7/07
