Cosmic Illusions

lofty quilts and high art by Salli McQuaid

With the seemingly endless personal tragedies that have occurred throughout the worst natural disaster in our country's history, I hope my new work Ashes not only expresses the universal bleakness and loss that accompany death, but will provide some consolation to those who were caught in Hurricane Katrina's fury. It is my deepest belief and prayer that out of the immense destruction our people will build better and happier lives. We will always own our memories, and surely we will once again meet.

Buffalo grazed still fields,
while a lone post watched
Weary, we rested. The horizon glowed
points of light, faded and then vanished

The creek flowed cold, numbing the view
An eroded tractor lumbered into camp
A new day opened. Children ran
electric and conquered trees like summits

Hauling a dead tree to brew. Once
giant, its resolution was now ashen
Our creek streamed in to storm-ridden
grief.
