Artist's Statement

Texas is a country, not a state. The sun burns so steadily and the weather is so steamy that it seems like there are three suns, not one. Her topography comprises the Gulf, bayous, the Piney Woods, hill country, deserts, mesas, and vast flatlands. The armadillo is our State animal and the blue bonnet the State flower. In Houston, buildings loom tall, like talismans against the sky. Such Texas imagery is contained in Our Lady, as is the Holy Mother, who is holding a horse. The horse is an important icon of Texas culture; and here, I believe the Holy Mother holds a special place for the horse in her heart.
