Artist 's Statement
I
attended a lecture at Whitman College in Walla Walla, by the great sculptor Deborah
Butterfield, who makes the famous "Styx" horses seen all
over the world. After her
lecture, I felt inspired. I resolved to go back to my studio and
create works that were freer, more painterly, and more
dimensional. With creating a triptych in mind, I began composing
intuitively. I started with #1: Cold Sea (Cosmic Illusion
96), moved on to #2: Rainbow Sky (Cosmic Illusion
97), and completed with #3: Winter Falls (Cosmic
Illusion 98). Because I believed there was so much
visual rhythm in the compositions, I named the triptych
Three Movements. The work seems akin to color field
paintings. I believe Deborah Butterfield
as one of the finest sculptors since Michelangelo, and this
triptych is a homage to her work.
