The imagination must be employed to understand this quilt, although it can be
interpreted in a number of ways. To me, the dragon is climbing out of the “black
hole” of flight training to accept his wings. At the upper right is a sequential
series of cosmic blasts, which often occur in space. The quilt is definitely
whimsical, and its title, of course, is tongue-in-cheek. Note the interesting
perspective achieved in the wings, the sculptural quality of the raised
wing-flaps, and the fine stitching detail.
Top Dragon
was created
extemporaneously, without much pre-planning, but it just seemed to “fall”
together from my imagination. The quilt has been critically savaged (perhaps
rightfully), but many people absolutely love it. With which group do you side?
